This is a legacy project for
these authentic Melodramas performed generations ago
in Australia. And so as to not spoil all the fun by
giving away a play synopsis ... go ahead and click
on each of the Melodramas and peruse an excerpt of
the plays in your search for a new Melodrama for
your school, church, club, or charity to perform.
As with all plays on our
website, feel free to change dialogue, character
names, and even adjust the location to match your
venue if you desire. Old-time Melodramas on both
continents commonly adjusted dialogue to the towns
that traveling theatre troupes visited ... so you
have the same license. Just make sure that you keep
it a "clean" G or PG performance. The songs listed
in each of these Australian Melodramas are easily
found by a quick Google search., but do feel free to
make changes or modifications to the lyrics to suite
your audience, venue, and how long you want your
play to run. Simply eliminate a song or two if you
must, but these quick 2-act plays each run about 60
minutes without an intermission ... so run-time
should not be an issue.
These plays were written in a
far less politically correct time and on a different
Continent ... so feel free to make adjustments if
something doesn't make sense or makes too much sense
for your audience. Melodramas when performed
properly have a great deal of improvisation anyway
... so this is just your permission to customize
your play a little bit more. If you want to add
